Favela Vidigal
As you know by now. The way to the Favela Vidigal, at least on foot, is from the far end of Ipanema Beach. Here a look back, partway up to the Sheraton. |
The show already starts on the road up, where artists did their best to cover boring concrete walls with their designs |
One of the outlying houses of the favela with fantastic artwork |
Since I really didn't know where I was going, I walked. However, here by the entrance, other than a number of police, there are the moto taxies and a fleet of VW buses that serve as taxis in this unique neighborhood. |
You see them everywhere and they are kept very busy all day and evening. |
Dramatic stuff, don't you think? As one who used to draw and paint a bit himself, I can really appreciate these murals and the skill on display here. |
A classic and restored MG A |
Looking around, you ask, wait, this is a dangerous area? I don't get it. Well, it is one of the few 'pacified' favelas. And once the dealers were forced out, money started to roll in. A lot of the poor who used to live here, don't anymore. Half of this neighborhood seems to be under construction, or rather, re-construction. Most of the houses have lovely views and are now cherished possession of those with money to not only buy into this place, but also totally modernize those old houses. There are still a lot of the old residents here as well. They may be waiting for home prices to appreciate sufficiently for them to decide to sell out. |
